Emma Hosford, L.Ac.
Acupuncturist and Herbalist
Emma Hosford, L.Ac.
I first came to Chinese medicine as a patient. I had lived for years with a chronic and undiagnosed illness that stymied many doctors and other practitioners. What I found in Chinese medicine was a system that treated the whole person, not just their disparate symptoms. As I began to heal, I also began to study the medicine. I found it deeply captivating and inspiring in both its power and subtlety, and in its ability to bring philosophy, art, and beauty to the healing process.
I view it as a true responsibility and privilege to guide others on their journey toward greater health. Vibrant health happens when the whole of a person - body, mind, and spirit - is in harmony as one being. In my clinic, I understand healing to be a collaboration between patient and practitioner. Together we can use Chinese medicine as a catalyst for health and greater harmony.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient healing modality that can be traced back to East Asia over 2000 years ago. Thin sterile stainless steel needles are inserted into different parts of the body to activate the body’s natural healing potential. These points are chosen based on the person’s constitution and the specific imbalances in their body. Needles are usually left in for 20-30 minutes. People may experience some discomfort upon needle insertion, but it is not long lasting, and most people experience a deep relaxation, and may even nap during their treatment.
Herbal Medicine
I offer two types of herbal medicine: pills or raw whole herbs. Formulas in pill form are sourced from a company that has direct relations with local farmers in China. They are made from the highest quality herbs which are grown, harvested, and processed using ancient methods, and in doing so are persevering vital traditions. They are tested throughly for pesticides and heavy metals. Chinese herbs are almost always prescribed in formulas, meaning that multiple herbs are taken together in order to address many of the body's needs and provide a balanced and stable medicine.
I also offer custom blends of raw herbs that can be altered based on your needs. These herbal formulas must be decocted (or cooked) at home, and require more time and dedication, but it can be a rewarding way to be a part of your own healing. Making your own medicine can be a kind of medicine itself.
The longer you have had a condition, the longer it tends to take to address it with either herbs or acupuncture. Herbs work in a multitude of ways, but often they help remind the body how to heal itself. This can have long lasting and profound impact.
Pricing
Initial Appointments are $175

I have been working with Emma for a year now and choosing to work with her has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. Emma, more than an acupuncturist and herbalist, has been a guide, companion, and cheerleader as I recover from chronic illness. Emma is interested in the whole self and will sit with you every session to discuss how you're feeling and anything in your life that might be affecting your health and wellbeing. I deeply enjoy my sessions with Emma and always leave feeling better than when I arrived. What can I expect during my appointment?
Our initial appointment will last approximately 1.5-2 hours. I will perform a pulse diagnosis as well as a comprehensive intake regarding your current health concerns, health history, and family history.
Subsequent treatments will be approximately 50 min -1 hour in length.
Please come to your appointment well hydrated and having eaten something 1-2 hours ahead of time. Acupuncture works best when the body is well nourished.
Please wear comfortable clothes that can be rolled up to the elbow or knee. Some treatments may require removal of clothing; if this is the case, a sheet or gown will be provided for modesty and comfort.
Do you take insurance?
No; payment is required in full at the end of your session. I am always happy to provide an itemized receipt for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please note that I cannot guarantee reimbursement. It is your responsibility to know and understand your individual policy's coverage.
I do accept FSA and HSA cards.
What if I feel nervous about needles?
Acupuncture needles are very different than other medical needles. They are smaller, thinner, and less painful upon insertion. Some points do elicit a pain response, but it is usually minor and fleeting.
I am always in communication with my patients and we can adjust the treatment based on your needs and comfort level. If you have any concerns regarding this, please feel free to contact me. Chinese medicine also offers a variety of other treatment modalities including cupping, gua sha, and moxibustion and we can build treatments around these techniques. These options are also great for kids!
